A conscious travel guide to Ibiza

March 2, 2022 • By Eva Ramirez

The Balearic island of Ibiza, with its azure coastline, peaceful coves, historic old town, verdant pine forests and rugged terrain offers so much for a well-rounded holiday. Here’s our round-up of sustainable options to stay, eat, drink and do…

Travelling is a luxury, and conserving the natural environment of the beautiful locations we visit should be part of the experience. We can do so first-hand by taking part in conservation initiatives and volunteer work or simply making eco-friendly choices when selecting our transport, accommodation and activities. Discover our conscious travel guide for Ibiza.

(stay) Six Sense Ibiza

On the northern tip of Ibiza, the newly-opened Six Senses provides a calming sanctuary that’s designed and operates with sustainability at the heart. Set over 20-acres, it’s like staying in a mini village. Sprawling sea views and direct access to the beautiful bay of Cala Xarraca, the hotel is the Balearic’s first sustainable BREEAM certified resort. Interiors are calming and grounding while still feeling super luxurious, and the food champions farm-to-table eating with plenty of locally grown and organic dishes from the on-site farm which includes a 400-year-old olive press.

(stay) Atzaró

Atzaró Agroturismo in the north of the island is a stunning estate that’s well-loved for its natural beauty, sense of calm and sustainable credentials. The thirteen-hectare playground is home to a hotel, spa, freshwater swimming pool, vegetable garden and picturesque citrus groves. With vines draped over arches and romantic candlelit tables come night time, dining at either of Atzaro’s restaurants – La Veranda and The Orange Tree – provide a memorable experience and refreshing taste of what Mediterranean produce has to offer. The food-focused hospitality group also have other delicious offshoots on the island – Aubergine by Atzaró, Atzaró Chiringuito and Atzaró Beach.

(stay) Fincadelica

Fincadelica provides a taste of Ibicencan style slow-living in one-of-a-kind historic settings. The 300-year old farmstead with its ancient stone tower sits amongst 20 acres of land at the heart of the island in Sant Lorenc de Balafia. Forgoing the party side of Ibiza for utter seclusion, peace and privacy, you’ll be enamoured by the eclectic 70s-inspired interiors throughout the home and its 9 bedroom suites, all of which make the most of natural materials and tactile furnishings. Embellished with carefully-curated decorative pieces, it’s an antique lover’s treasure trove. The exclusive villa estate just launched in 2021 and is solely available for private hire, making it the perfect unforgettable escape for weddings and other special occasions.

(eat) Casa Maca

Dining at Casa Maca is nothing short of magical. Bountiful tables are scattered across the grounds of this rural hotel overlooking a glittering view of Ibiza Town and the majestic Dalt Villa. The vegetable-forward menu is indulgent and rich yet uses simple, homegrown ingredients. The roast miso aubergine is a must try, as is the truffle mashed potato (topped in a thick, oozing layer of organic cheese) and of course, a shot of homemade Hierbas to round off your meal.

(eat) El Portalon

In the heart of the old town, in a petite courtyard canopied by a large tree and through hefty wooden doors you’ll find El Portalon. It’s quaint and understated but leaves a lasting impression.

Serving sustainably grown and sourced food from the owner’s farm as well as the top cheese-makers, bakers, bee-keepers, fishermen and herders who are at the forefront of Ibiza’s sustainable food movement. For a gastronomic tour of the Island, be sure to arrive hungry and opt for the chef’s tasting menu.

Take a trip on a solar-powered catamaran

La Bella Verde is an Ibiza-based boat charter company with a difference. Their solar powered eco-catamarans are 100% emission free and use no fuel whatsoever. It’s a great form of exercise and you can always stop off for a spot of snorkelling too.
